Omanis' Tendencies towards Hosting Sporting Events in the Sultanate of Oman

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the tendencies of Omanis towards hosting sporting events in the Sultanate of Oman and linking it to a set of economic, social and developmental variables. This aim is achieved by identifying first, Omanis willingness to host sporting events, second, main reasons behind choosing Omanis to host sporting events, and the relationship between the motives for selecting the causes and the level of the selected sporting events. This study is carried out through a descriptive survey method. The sample consisted of 1103 participants of whom 587 who belong to the sports sector in Oman, and 516 who did not belong to the Omani sports sector.

The results indicated that Omanis have a great desire to host sporting events of all levels. Omanis willingness to host sporting events was also higher for small and medium sporting events in Oman compared to mega and international sporting events. Such results confirm the fact that Omanis are aware of the appropriate sporting events to host in the current period of Oman’s sporting capabilities. All factors (economic, social, etc.) influenced the desire of Omanis to host sporting events in Oman.

The recommendations of the study include increasing of small and medium-size sporting events in Oman, hosting sports events that are compatible with Oman citizens desires. Also, taking into account the sports facilities to be planned in the future to be connected to form a network to host major and mega sports events under Omani sports plans and Oman Vision 2040.
