Perceptions of experts in physical education towards the possibility of including some kinetic popular folklore in the physical education subject in the Sultanate of Oman

Abstract

The study aims to reveal the perceptions of experts in physical education(PE) regarding the possibility of including popular kinetic folklore in PE curricula in Oman. To achieve this aim, researchers conducted an individual, semi-open interview with a sample of experts specialized in PE, which consisted of three academics from Sultan Qaboos University and five subject supervisors from the Ministry of Education. The results revealed that the study sample sees kinetic popular folklore as an effective tool in preserving cultural identity and connecting different generations by training students in these dances that are related to different aspects, such as weddings, celebrations, war, or working in certain professions. In addition, the results show that teaching kinetic folklore is compatible with the goals of PE. Furthermore, including kinetic folklore help to achieves cognitive, social, psychological, economic and emotional benefits, and thus highlights the unity of knowledge and integration between the cognitive dimensions of kinetic folklore. The results revealed three challenges that may against the application of kinetic folklore, related to parents and the extent to which they accept this approach, students and the extent of their interaction, and teachers and the extent to which they are able to perform this folklore and train students in it correctly.

In general, the researchers recommend developing PE curricula by including lessons and activities in kinetic folklore. Such development helps educational institutions achieve the requirements of Oman Vision 2040, which has made among its priorities raising generations to be proud of the Omani identity and cultural heritage.
