The reality of physical therapy for patients with knee osteoarthritis in the western region of Libya

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the reality of physiotherapy treatment for patients with knee osteoarthritis in the western region of Libya (Al-Zawiya, Sorman, and Sabratha). The research focuses on identifying the most affected age groups, gender differences, primary risk factors, therapeutic methods used in physiotherapy centers, patients’ reliance on alternative medicine, and their responsiveness to treatment over time.
A descriptive-analytical approach was adopted, and data were collected from a sample of 50 patients of both genders, aged between 30 and 90 years. Findings revealed that the age group most susceptible to knee osteoarthritis was 50–70 years (64%). The prevalence among women was 70%, compared to 30% among men. Major risk factors included falls, prolonged standing hours, and excessive weight. Electrical nerve stimulation (DD) and ultrasound therapy (U/S) were the most commonly used physiotherapy modalities.
The study concluded that 46% of patients showed good response to physiotherapy, while 38% achieved excellent outcomes. It recommends early detection of risk factors, enhancement of public health awareness programs, and development of rehabilitation protocols and physiotherapy equipment to improve patients’ quality of life and expedite their return to normal daily activities.
